Girton College Archive, Cambridge

The Library houses the College Archive. The Archive is the intended repository for the long-term preservation of records which reflect or illustrate the history of the College, and its internal administration (records which document its organisation, functions, policies, decisions and procedures). These comprise records created by the Governing Body, academic and administrative departments, members and former members of staff, and former students as well as records derived from other functions associated with the College.

The Library also has manuscript collections, acquired by gift, purchase or deposit since the College foundation.

However, the prime objective of the collection policy is to build upon the existing collections. The aims can be summarised as follows:

To identify and preserve the information in any format relating to the history and administration of Girton College. Most of these records will be accumulated naturally by the College in the course of its activities and need to be identified by the Archivist for appropriate retention.

To build upon the collections of personal papers of former members and associated individuals or organisations. In this the aim is to:

Identify and preserve the personal papers of prominent alumni.

Pursue an active acquisitions policy regarding manuscript material of Girton's contemporary writers.

Pursue an active acquisitions policy regarding the papers of Girton's eminent scientists, Particularly those who are FRS.

Pursue an active acquisitions policy regarding the papers of individuals and organisations active in the cause of women's education and social history.

Some records may be acquired by or offered to Girton which relate to the history of higher education for women. These will be accepted whenever possible.

Efforts will also be made to build up an oral record of the history of College by recordings with former members and staff.
