David Stanbury (1933-1997) was a teacher and naturalist with a life long passion and interest in Darwin. He was particularly interested in Darwin's experience as the ship's naturalist on board HMS Beagle during its voyage to the southern hemisphere from December 1831 to October 1836. During his lifetime Stanbury amassed a large archive of material relating to this voyage with the intention, unfulfilled, of writing a book about it. He edited Captain Robert Fitzroy's narrative for the Folio Society in 1977 and was historical advisor to the BBC for their 'Voyage of Charles Darwin' series in 1978.
The Collection consists of articles, notes, typed manuscripts, copied letters and diary extracts, maps, Hydrographic surveys, ship's logs, photographs, copy photographs of topographical drawings, tapes and videos and 4 card index boxes - all material for a planned book about the Beagle Voyages.
