He was a Fellow of Christ's College and Headmaster of the Perse School in Cambridge where he advocated the 'Direct Method' of learning; by doing as well as watching and listening. Along with T.E Page and Edward Capps, he was appointed a founding editor of the Loeb Classical Library. He continued to translate classical works into his retirement, including Homer's Odyssey.
This extensive and wide- ranging collection of documents includes correspondence, articles written by Rouse, research papers, photographs of Greece, the donations of Frederic Mestrezat's Journal and the Letter Books of General William Medows. Of particular interest are the papers relating to Rouse's headmastership of Perse School and his thoughts on education and the teaching of Latin. The collection has been divided by the type of material and arranged chronologically into the following series: ROUSE/1: Correspondence, ROUSE/2: Translations and research, ROUSE/3: Printed materials & articles ROUSE/4: Photographs, ROUSE/5: Gifts to College.
