The Syndicate was established by grace in 1854 to supervise the licensing of accommodation for undergraduates outside the Colleges. Its functions expanded during the twentieth century to encompass also the provision of an accommodation advisory service. Its name changed to the Accommodation Syndicate in 1979.
From the 1818 until 1992, when the system of University licensing came to end, all undergraduates not resident in College were obliged to live in licensed lodgings (known as lodging houses) ruled over by a Lodging House Keeper or in the house of an M.A. or the widow of an M.A. The records document both the licensing of accommodation and the advisory service provided for students.
Transfers of papers were made to the University Archives from the Syndicate offices in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
