Its first incarnation was as Cambridge University Opera Group 1954-63. It was reestablished as Cambridge University Opera Society in 1966. It exists to promote the enjoyment of opera through lectures, discussions, recitals, master-classes and the staging of operatic productions.

For further background information on the society, see http://www.cam.ac.uk/societies/opera/

All aspects of the society's activities are reflected in the surviving records. Significant quantities of productions records are held for performances from 1972 onwards.

The bulk of the records of the Opera Society were transferred to the University by P. Tregear, Pendelbury Librarian, Faculty of Music, on 3 September 1997. Records of the Opera Group were transferred from among the Tranchell Papers (classmark: Mss. Tranchell) in the Manuscripts Section of the Department of Manuscripts and University Archives in 2003.
