Content and context

The group was founded in October 1957 by Nic[holas Coit] Flemming (Pembroke College, B.A. 1960); [? Peter William] (Bill) Hemmings (Gonville and Caius College, B.A. 1957); and David [Godffrey] Fagan (St John's College, B.A. 1959) to ''practice diving both as an enjoyable sport, and as a way of doing research or exploring the wildest boundaries of the seas and lakes''. C.U.U.E.G. was the first university branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club. The group provides tuition to both novice and experienced divers; and runs diving explorations nationally and internationally, some of which carry out research projects. Past fields of research have included biology, archaeology and psychology. It has won the B.S-A.C. Duke of Edinburgh's Prize for underwater achievement three times. Past members include the astronaut Colin Michael Foal (Queens' College, B.A. 1978). Further information about the group's activities is on its website at www.societies.cam.ac.uk/cuueg/.

The records were transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 4 April 2008. Initial deposits were made in 1974 and 1987 by the Cambridge University Underwater Exploration Group with the Manuscripts Department. Both were given the classmark Ms.Add.8707. A third batch of material was presented to the University Archives by Rowena Crawford (Corpus Christi College), as Treasurer of C.U.U.E.G., on 7 February 2008. A list of which items formed the third accession may be obtained from the University Archives. A contact list (added to SOC 92.16) and SOC.92.19 were presented to the University Archives by Neil Titchener on 14 July 2009.

Files SOC.92.2; SOC.92.12; SOC.92.14 and SOC.92.18 were held by the C.U.U.E.G. scientific officer as a resource to be consulted and borrowed by those planning expeditions. Their contents had become considerably confused and there was a great deal of duplication. The current organisation represents a rationalisation of contents by the archivist prior to cataloguing.
