Content and context

Cambridge University Ice Hockey Club was formed in 1885. In that year a Varsity match was held at St Moritz, Switzerland. Another Varsity match in London in 1900 is reputed to be the first game played in England. Certainly, clubs at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities were influential in the development of the game in Britain, as they held seats on the council of the game's governing body, the British Ice Hockey Association. By the 1920s and 30s, Cambridge University's was one of the leading amateur teams in the country, and often included several international players. In 1936, certain members of the club were part of the British Olympic team which won the gold medal at the Winter Olympics. On 11 February 1939, the Varsity match became the first televised game of ice hockey. Many members of the team were, and continue to be, international students, particularly Canadians. Further information about the club's activities is on its website at www.cam.ac.uk/societies/cuihc/.

The majority of the records were transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 12 November 2007. The Cambridge University Ice Hockey Club had made deposits with the Manuscripts Department on 21 October 1976 and again in 1999. These were given the classmark Ms.Add.8087. A further deposit was made with the University Archives by Craig Steeves on behalf of the club on 17 April 2003. This was combined with Ms.Add.8087. Professor Bill Harris, senior member of the club, transferred the photograph album catalogued as SOC.76.6.3 on 16 August 2011. A larger transfer of assorted records, catalogued as 76.2.3.3-6, 76.3.2-3, 76.4.3, 76.5.1.2 (addnl), 76.5.1.5 (addnl), 76.5.2 (addnl), 76.5.4 (addnl), 76.5.5 (addnl), 76.6.3-6, 76.7.2 (addnl), 76.8.9 (addnl), was also transferred by Harris on 19 September 2011. SOC.76.8.10 was transferred from Manuscripts Department in September 2012, having been deposited in that department by Harris in 2005.

The natural groupings of the records had been extensively disrupted before deposit on all occasions. The current organisation largely represents a reorganisation by the archivist prior to cataloguing. Where a file has been wholly created by the archivist this is noted.
