The union was established as the Cambridge Union for Private Prayer in March 1848. It had the object of united private prayer, initially in support of a Church Missionary Society mission to China, but then also for wider issues selected by the committee. Members prayed between 6 and 7 am on the first Saturday of each month wherever they happened to be. To begin with members were ordinands but this evolved to include any Anglican member of the university and at its height in 1898 the union had 1909 members on its books. The union's committee consisted of both senior and junior members. It was formally wound up in February 1934 with outstanding funds divided between Ridley Hall and Westcott House.
The records were transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 18 October 2007. Item SOC.72.1 had been given by the Cambridge University Prayer Union to the Manuscripts Department on 10 October 1934 and had been given the classmark Ms.Add.6761. Item SOC.72.2 had been presented by Sir S. Gaselee to the Manuscripts Department on 14 November 1940 and had been given the classmark Ms.Add.7039

Minutes of meetings of the committee, signed. Pasted into the volume are prayer lists for 1890 and 1891 and a circular letter of 1909 detailing the history and object of the union. A letter from S.R. Smith to A.F. Scholfield, University Librarian, is tipped into the front of the volume, 10 October 1934. It details an additional volume of bound papers which it indicates, seemingly erroneously, have been deposited with the University Library. 1 volume; paper. |
