The club was created in 1833 by former members of the Cambridge drama society 'The Shakespeare Club', run by W.H. Smith. It was sometimes also referred to as the Cambridge Garrick Club and was founded to facilitate the performance of theatrical works and, as such, had both performing and non performing members. Its rules stated that members were to encourage the "diffusion of a taste for polite literature and rational amusement".
The records were transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 3 October 2007. Items SOC.48.1.1 and 2 had been bequeathed by J.W. Clark, M.A. Trinity College, Registrary, to the Manuscripts Department in 1910 and had been given the classmark Ms.Add.5048 and 9. Item SOC.48.2 had been bought from W.A. Myers (Autographs) Ltd., 80 New Bond Street, London, W1 by the Manuscripts Department on 9 October 1969 and had been given the classmark Ms.Add.7786.
