Content and context

This incarnation of the Fabian Society was re-established in Easter term 1977 to promote political education of its members through the discussion of socialist ideas. It organised a regular programme of speakers and debates and, in the early stages, had a officer charged with carrying out social research. From 1977 members of the Cambridge Labour party were welcome to attend meetings. Later the society became affiliated to this party.

Includes detailed results of elections, lists of committee post holders (at rear) and a 'Handbook and Programme' for Michaelmas Term 1983. The handbook contains a forward by Rt Hon Michael Foot MP, the Chairperson's introduction, a list of officers and of the committee, the programme of speakers and events (to include David Blunkett, later MP) and a transcript of Clause 4 of the Labour Party Constitution.

This item was transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 28 September 2007. It had been deposited by the Cambridge Fabian Society with the Manuscripts Department on 19 March 1984 and was given the classmark Ms.Add.8407.
