Content and context

The society was established in 1903 to promote discussion about classical teaching both in the university and in a wider context. From the outset membership was open to any graduate resident in Cambridge with an interest in the subject but in practice its members were largely from the university. It also aimed to be a forum in which to discuss how best to meet the requirements of the Tripos.

The volume has been used to record general, committee and subcommittee meetings; and notes of speakers with titles of papers given. Correspondence, printed copies of the laws of the society are tipped in between pages.

This item was transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts Department on 28 September 2007. It had been presented by the Cambridge Classical Society to the Manuscripts Department on 31 January 1950 and was given the classmark Ms.Add.7217.
