Content and context

The society was formed as a result of the merger on 10 June 1957 of a previous society also named the Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society (founded 28 April 1950) with the Cambridge University Society of Genealogists (founded 11 October 1954). Its purpose is the promotion and encouragement of the study of heraldry, genealogy and related topics. There is a regular programme of speaker meetings, outings, and social events including an annual dinner and a garden party. Former member David Vines White (Pembroke College) and former club president Michael Peter Desmond O'Donoghue (Gonville and Caius College) are now both officers of the English College of Arms (Somerset Herald and Bluemantle Pursuivant respectively). Further information about the society's activities is on its website: http://www.societies.cam.ac.uk/cuhags/.

The items in this collection were deposited variously with the University Archives and Manuscripts Departments of Cambridge University Library from 1976. At some stage the items were united under the classmark Ms.Add.8253 in the Manuscripts Department. All were then transferred (or returned) to the University Archives on 8 May 2008. Accession dates and depositor names for individual items may be obtained from the University Archives.

Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society
University/SOC.100 contains:
SOC.100.1 Minutes of general and committee meetings of the Cambridge University Heraldic and Genealogical Society, 1950-57, signed; together with minutes of general meetings of the successor society of the same name, 1957-9, signed; and a constitution of 1971. When the first C.U.H.G.S and the C.U.S.G. merged in 1957 it was decided that the C.U.H.G.S. minute book (SOC.100.1) would be used for minutes of general meetings and that C.U.S.G. minute book (SOC.100.2.1) would be used for minutes of committee meetings. However from October 1959 minutes of all meetings were being recorded in SOC.100.2.1 due to the fragility of SOC.100.1. The names of committee members are usually listed at the beginning of each academic year. A constitution from the 9 March 1971 is taped in.
