4 Composicio quod procuratores possunt congregare in defectu cancellarii. Memorandum of agreement, to have perpetual validity, by the Regent and Non-Regent Masters and the greater bachelors, in the presence of Mr John Hooke, Chancellor, to a statute about the Rectors, whose duties are set forth: to fix the times and modes of reading and disputing, and of celebrating exequies and feasts. Rebels against their authority are to be punished through the Bedells. If the Chancellor is absent the Rectors may call together the University in the case of attacks on clerks, and may cause offenders to be punished.

Chirograph of composition as to ownership of the tithes of Wirksworth, Derbyshire, between 1) Master Oliver de Sutton, Dean, and the Chapter of Lincoln, with Nicholas de Oxonia, vicar, and 2) the Abbot and Convent of Darley. The seal of the officiality of Coventry and Lichfield is appended to each part; also seals of Oliver de Sutton and of the Chapter. There are two other seal slits without evidence of tags.

6 Exemplification of composition between the University and the Professor of Civil Law. William de Luda, Bishop of Ely, exemplifies a composition reached in a cause between (1) G[eoffrey] de Pakenham, Doctor of Canon Law and Chancellor of the University, the Rectors and the Regent Masters and (2) Master R[ichard] de Leycestria, Professor of Civil Law, on the distinctions of seats ('sedum') which, after Master Richard had appealed to Canterbury and for the tuition of the Holy See, was with the consent of both sides referred to the Bishop's decision. He, having heard the cases of both sides in Cambridge, referred it to Master Thomas of London, Canon of Wells, Master Richard of York, Chancellor of Salisbury, and Master Guy, then his own official, and now confirms their decision in favour of the statutes 'super sedum distinctione'. Sealed on a queue which has now disappeared.

9 Indenture of exemplification of composition. Exemplification by Master G., official of Ely, of a composition reached, after an attempt to take the cause into a royal court, of a dispute about the ownership of certain houses near [St John's] hospital claimed by Scholars and notably by Master Henry de Wysethe, who had taught there, against the Prior and Convent of Barnwell. The Bishop referred the dispute to the official for settlement and the University and Barnwell appeared before him on the eve of St Mary Magdalen. Possession of the house was to be returned to Barnwell and the keys surrendered by Henry de Wysethe to the Sacrist but after the intervention of friends he was allowed to remain in possession until the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (8 Sept.) next.

This charter interprets and defines the statutes in a dispute (? concerning the numbers of Doctors in the Faculty of Theology) referred to the official by the Bishop of Ely, between Henry de Boyton, Chancellor and the Regent Masters in Theology.

13 Composition of Bordeaux. Text, notarially attested, of proceedings resulting in a composition arrived at in Bordeaux in the presence of Pope Clement and Thomas (Jorz, Order of Preachers), Cardinal Priest of St Sabina on 17 June 1306 between Stephen de Segrave, Doctor of Canon Law, Chancellor of the University, and Master Thomas de Kernyngham, on behalf of the University, and John de Westerfeld and Peter de Rula, O.P., John de la More, Richard de Insula, John of Ipswich, Reginald de Seria, Henry de Luceby and Adam de Kyrkby, O.F.M., for the friars, after the friars of Cambridge had appealed to the Curia against a statute enforcing all about to incept in Theology to preach three sermons 'ad clerum' in Great St Mary's. The statute was modified to exclude mendicants from its requirement and to protect them from any reprisals by members of the University. Seal of ? the University attached.

16 Indenture of agreement between 1) the Chancellor and Masters of the University and 2) Nicholas called Le Barber. Agreement about a house of scholars opposite St Mary's church, in which canonists, decretists, legists and theologians have been used to lecture and of which Nicholas wishes to regain possession as a dwelling house. Nicholas agrees to leave the scholars in possession for one year after the translation of St Thomas Martyr, they paying a suitable rent, and at the end of the term the Bedells will remove the scholars and allow Nicholas to enter on the property.

Injunction and permission to the Chancellor and University (as from one concerned for its privileges, customs and statutes) in attempted appeals from the Chancellor's jurisdiction to the Bishop's audience or to his official, where the subject is mera civilis or where an attempt is made by a royal prohibition to stay causes, to continue to hear the cause. Given at Somersham.

35 Counterpart of chirograph of ordination. Issued by Thomas de Northwode, S.T.P., Chancellor of the University and Archdeacon of Lincoln, to Walter Neel, citizen of London and Lord of Eslingham [? Elsenham] and John Wythorn of Dounton, Rector of Halstead and Lord of Bendish, Essex, who have endowed a chest [fund] of £100 for the use of the Masters and Scholars of the University, providing for election of keepers, records of loans and pledges, and an annual audit. In return for this Walter and John are to be enrolled among the benefactors of the University, and this composition is to be enrolled in the book of statutes. Document bears initial letter with blue decoration. Seals of Wythorn (a bust) and Neel (standing figure and counterseal of ? merchant's mark) are attached.

37 Statutes for Pembroke Hall. There is no sign that this is an official registration, although f.1 narrates the registration with the University for reading 'in plena congregacione'. It is bound as ff.1-8 inside covers made from an account roll said to be for St Florence in Pembrokeshire: property of the foundress until 1357.

Grant is by Richard Lyng, Chancellor, and the University to Mary, Countess of Pembroke and the keeper and scholars, of a messuage in St Peter at Trumpington gates between John de Holme and Pembroke Hall, for the maintenance of a chaplain to celebrate daily for Roger de Heidon and for an anniversary at St Mary's church.

48 Notification under seal by John de Donwich, Chancellor. Notification that when John de Horneby, 'sacre pagine professor', of the Order of Carmelite Friars, a Regent in the University, made request to the full congregation of Regents and Non-Regents for the reversal of the decision made by some of the students of the University to exclude the order of Carmelite friars from the teaching of the University, he cited Horneby to appear and state the case before himself and other venerable men nominated by the Regents and Non-Regents to assist him. Horneby appeared and exhibited papal privileges and the rule of the order, and the Chancellor now decrees that the Carmelites shall be restored to the University and inhibits further attempts to exclude them.

Comprise enrolment of : (1) special commission of Richard II in response to a petition from the University to Parliament permitting the Chancellor etc. to have the assize of bread and ale etc. until the next Parliament, 6 Nov. 1378; (2) mandate of John Avenell, Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, to John [Blan]kepayn, Bailiff of the liberty of the vill of Cambridge repeating and ordering the execution of a royal mandate to him concerning the assizes, weights and measures, and forestalling and regrating for which he is to empanel a jury of twenty-four; (3) certificate of the Sheriff that he has sent this mandate and has received from the Bailiffs a reply that twelve men had been summoned and had presented on oath that there were no breaches of the law by victuallers; (4) mandate of venire facias to Sheriff, Friday after Hilary 1379, to summon before the Chancellor two legal men and these present that a gallon of ale is sold at a penny halfpenny [gap in roll] but seek time for presenting the names of brewers. They come in the first week of Lent with a juror short and Simon Hendthibowe is given to them to make up the number; their presentment is attached to the roll; (5) venire facias addressed to the Sheriff to cite nineteen persons to appear and answer. He replies that they have been summoned and have not come and therefore are in mercy.

Constance. This is a copy, since the original was sealed.

100 Indenture of a grant in perpetuity from the Keeper and Fellows of Trinity Hall to the Chancellor and University. Conveys the site of the Canon Law Schools for an annual rent of two silver pennies: that is, a plot on the east side of their garden, abutting west on University land, north on the new chapel in Schools Street and south on the garden of the Holy Cross Hospital, with the stone wall of a newly erected house belonging to the University built on it. Easement for access for repair; with due regard for the crops of the garden. Bears Trinity Hall seal.

113 Arbitration concerning the pension payable to the vicar of St Botolph's church. One part of a tripartite indenture embodying an arbitration made at the request of the contestants in a dispute over a pension payable to and an augmentation of the vicarage of St Botolph's church , Cambridge, between Master Geoffrey Couper, vicar of St Botolph's, and the Master, John Tyttesale, and Fellows of Corpus Christi College, patrons of the church. The arbitrators chosen were John Langton, Master of Pembroke, William Stonham, Richard Pygttesle and John Costyn, bachelors in laws and in decretis. They allot to the vicar all predial tithes and half an acre of glebe land (Botulph's half-acre) and a pension of four marks. Bears three small seals on two queues.

130a-b Copies, made contemporaneously and during the 15th century, of statute of William Wolflete, S.T.P., and the University. The statute relates to the regulation of loans from the chest of St John, for the sale of cautions one month after the expiry of the term, and for the election of keepers and audit of their accounts in accordance with the practices observed in other chests. Both endorsed with the form of oaths of keepers. This statute is not explicitly included in 'Statuta in ordinem redacta'.

Tripartite indenture executed by Andrew Doket, President of Queens' College, binding himself to the University in a penal sum of twenty shillings if he and his successors fail to implement the terms of the will of Master William Syday, medical man of Cambridge, by which he endowed the College with a tenement called 'Bylneys' in the parish of Great St Mary's, from the proceeds of which a chaplain was to be found to celebrate in the College and keep his anniversary. College seal attached.

This is a much corrected draft of twenty-six motions made at the order of the Lady Margaret by John Fisher, Justice of the Common Pleas, Humphrey Conyngsby and Thomas Frowyk, the King's Sergeants at Law, for the settlement of various differences between the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Masters and Scholars on the one side and the Mayor, Bailiff and Burgesses on the other side. . The principal topics are:. 1) the privilege. 2) the Mayor's right to hear all actions between burgess and burgess or foreigner concerning victuals, unless a privileged person is involved. 3) punishment by the University authorities of affrays involving Scholars or Privileged Persons. 4) punishment by the officers of the common law of Scholars or Privileged Persons committing murder or felony. 5) imprisonment or committal by the Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor. 6) excessive tolls taken by the town from those bringing in victuals, wood, corn, grain and coal. 7) excessive meterage at the water-side taken by the Taxors. 8) excessive charges for permission to brew or bake levied by the Proctors and Taxors. 9) punishment of nuisances permitted by the University only if the town authorities fail within six weeks to correct them. 10) sedges in the King's Ditch to be removed by both sides before Michaelmas. 11) removal of butchers' waste. 12) interpretation of doubtful points to rest with the Lady Margaret during her life, and afterwards with the Lord Chancellor, Lord High Treasurer and the Chief Justices of the King's Bench and Common Pleas.

Arbitration by William Bokenham, William Burgoyn, Thomas Patenson, clerks, and John Puregold, gent., of Cambridge, in a dispute between the Chancellor, John Fisher, Masters and Scholars of the University, and William, Prior, and the Convent of Barnwell, as to their respective rights in Midsummer or Barnwell Fair. Both sides are bound, 6 June 1506, in 100 marks sterling. . The arbitrators have agreed that:. 1) the Prior and Convent shall enjoy for a term of sixty years, with option of renewal for a further sixty years, all the rights in the Fair claimed by the University, with the exception of cognizance of pleas or other causes in the Fair involving a Scholar, Scholar's servant or common minister of the University. 2) the Prior and Convent shall pay to the University, at two terms, a rent of twenty shillings sterling. 3) the Prior and Convent shall not make over their rights, or any part of them, without the agreement of the University. Space is left for an ornamental initial; some verbal corrections are added, but there is no sign that the document was prepared for sealing. Drafted at Cambridge. Bears pen trials on dorse.

Records that with the concurrence of the Chancellor, John Fisher, and the Regent and Non-Regent Masters of the University, Sir Robert Brudenell, Lord Chief Justice, Thomas Willughbie, Sergeant at Law, Mr William Capon, D.D., Christopher Bland, M.A., and Sir William Gefferey, clerk, executors of the will of Sir Robert Rede, knight, have granted to the Master, Dr William Capon, and Fellows of Jesus College an annuity of twenty marks procured by them from the Abbot and Convent of Waltham Holy Cross on 1 Nov. 1524. . The terms of the foundation are:. 1) three ordinary lectures in humanity, logic and philosophy are to be established in the Common Schools and are to be free. 2) the readers are to be appointed annually on St Barnabas' Day, 10 June, by the executors, who will also draw up statutes so long as they live; afterwards the authorities of the University will make appointments. 3) Jesus College is to pay each reader £4 per annum. 4) the readers are to pray for Sir Robert Rede each term, and the University is to institute an anniversary for him. Bears seals of five executors on parchment tags and of Jesus College on plaited silk strings.

Comprise:- (1) petition embodying the grievances of the secular clergy of the province of Canterbury, addressed to the Archbishop and Bishops assembled in a provincial council, in thirteen articles directed against the privileges of Franciscans and Dominicans (preaching, confessions, heretical opinions, abduction of youths) (2) replies of the mendicants to these articles (3) gravamina of the Friars at Universities (apparently relating to the Friars' complaints against the statutes of the mid fourteenth century); namely, the compulsions to rule in arts required only in Oxford and Cambridge; make expensive entertainments and sell their books and other things to pay for their act; and perform all the exercises required in Theology whereas in Oxford seculars are held to perform only once.

188(1-4) Conveyance to the University of land in University Street [Regent Walk], Cambridge; with related powers of attorney. Archbishop Matthew Parker conveys a plot of land in the new made street called University Street which he acquired from King's College; Robert Norgate and the fellows of Corpus Christi College convey to the same their own plot of land in the same place, which lies partly between the two brick walls in the parish of Great St Mary and partly between their new buildings (the street being twenty-four feet two inches at the east end; at the west end, on School Street, twenty-eight feet one and a half inches and in length 177 feet three inches) and covenant to maintain the brick walls and their coping, the street and the binding and chains of the books given by Archbishop Parker to the University, they being placed in lockers on the north side of the University Library. Documents bears signature and seal of Parker, and seals of the University and Corpus Christi College, all good impressions, in modern seal boxes.
