The body was established in October 1970 as Cambridge Students Union to campaign on such issues as student representation on University governing bodies and the admission of women students. In subsequent decades, interests extended to student funding, state school admissions, nursery provision and counselling, among other things. In March 1985, its name changed to Cambridge University Students Union.
It had premises at 3 Round Church Street, 1971-84; 4 Round Church Street, 1984-90; 11/12 Trumpington Street, 1990-2007; Old Examination Hall, Free School Lane, 2007- .
The records were transferred as a gift to the University Archives by Natalie Adams, Archivist, Churchill College, on 13 December 2007 and 3 July 2008. They had accumulated among the papers of Churchill College JCR.
The records have been retained and catalogued as part of the University Archives in the absence of official records direct from CUSU.
