Content and context

Correspondence regarding sightings of astronomical bodies in the sky, including correspondence with members of the public and crews on ships and letters concerning sightings of the comets 1947N and 1948L. The papers include a detailed air letter from a crew member of S.S 'Waimana' giving measurements and estimates of positions of comet 1947N in the southern skies, first sighted on 9 December 1947. There is also correspondence with Peter Henniker Heaton, 1948, and a copy of his poem 'The Independent Comet'.
