(1) Papers on photography

Letter from the Minister for Commerce and Industry in France, 1889, inviting the Astronomer Royal to the Photographic Congress in March 1889.

Correspondence with the Photographic Society of Great Britain, 1890, regarding a lecture wanted by them, which E.W. Maunder agreed to give.

Proof of an abstract of a paper by Captain W. de W. Abney titled 'Transmission of Sunlight through Earth's Atmosphere', 1892.

(2) Papers on seismology

Papers and correspondence relating to seismology, 1894-1914, including a request from the Turkish Ambassador to see the Royal Observatory's seismograph; reports of the earthquake shock in Bedfordshire, 7 December 1896, from Messrs Patey, Hemsley, Tannalull, Boyton and Wilkins, all referred to J. Milne of the Isle of Wight; correspondence with the Director of the Geological Survey of India concerning the earthquake of 12 June 1897; and correspondence with the Foreign Office regarding the earthquake in Chile on 23 July 1898 and the subsequent weather in Chile.

General correspondence with various individuals regarding earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, 1894-1914, mostly referred to Professor Milne of the Isle of Wight, with a further report on the earthquake at Valparaíso, Chile, on 16 August 1906, and that at Mexico City on 11 May 1907; a cutting from the 'New York Herald', 2 April 1907, on reasons for seismic disturbances; correspondence with the Foreign Office regarding a suitable seismometer for the Jamaican Government; and correspondence with H.H. Turner concerning the future of seismological work in the United Kingdom and whether Greenwich should take this over.
