Content and context

Correspondence concerning the location, identity, rates and purchases of various chronometers. The volume includes repairs to and complaints with chronometer makers; requests for chronometers for D. Livingstone and the Oregon expedition; a list of chronometer makers; a paper, in French, by Messrs Delamarche and Ploix on the influence of the magnetism of ships on the rates of chronometers; J Hartnup's 'importance of testing chronometers before they are used at sea'; and notes on the management of chronometers at Liverpool Observatory by W. Ellis. There are also papers on the Greenwich Time Ball and the Westminster Bell. The correspondents include J. Washington, G.G. Stokes, A. de Morgan and C.F.A. Shadwell.
