Greenwich Star Catalogues and Ledgers

Title Greenwich Star Catalogues and Ledgers
Reference GBR/0180/RGO 129
Creator Royal Observatory, Greenwich
Covering Dates 1743–1925 (predominantly 1840s-1910s)
Extent and Medium 289 volumes; 2 unbound items; 1 notebook; paper; The collection has been exposed to damp conditions and shows some red rot degradation.
Repository Royal Greenwich Observatory Archives
Content and context

It is thought these volumes are the preparatory reduction work of stellar observations made at Greenwich for the production of published star catalogues, particularly as a number are annotated with the phrase 'Copy for Press' or similar. Some parts (epoch 1892-1905, declination +90° to +65°) may represent work that contributed to the international 'Astrographic Catalogue' project.

These volumes contain a variety of standardised pro formas on which the reduction of stellar observations have been made. The forms seem to have been completed whilst loose and to have been bound up at a later date.

Produced or accumulated by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.

Access and Use

N.B. PLEASE ORDER 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE. Some items in this collection are very large making them awkward to handle. Many also exhibit signs of red rot degradation. Requests for access may be directed to the Royal Greenwich Observatory Archivist by sending an email to mss@lib.cam.ac.uk.

Three items/ sets of items noted as additions in the manuscript draft catalogue (''New Constants for Uncatalogued Stars, Greenwich Twelve Year Catalogues of Stars, Annual Catalogues 1877-1886'') were not found on the shelf at cataloguing in 2011.
