Content and context

S.H. Davis was possibly an amateur photographer. No further information is available.

A collection of three glass plate negatives measuring 215 x 165 mm, briefly captioned and signed by the photographer, S.H. Davis. Modern prints have been made from the negatives.

Included in the collection is a letter from Sir Benjamin Stone, written from the House of Commons and dated March 8 1906, which thanks the addressee, a Mr H.N. Fincham, for the photographs and suggests donating the negatives to the Royal Colonial Institute. The prints he writes, will be placed 'in my collection with much satisfaction, and pleasure' (a reference to the National Photographic Records Association, a body which Stone instituted and of which he was President).

1 Kealakeakua Bay. Cooks monument in foreground. 202 x 155 mm. A view showing the monument to Captain Cook, with Kealakeakua Bay in background. It was near this spot that Cook was killed on February 14 1779. Four marines also died in the fight.
