Sir William Lamond Allardyce (1861-1930) held several Colonial Governorships but his career began in Fiji, where he was posted in 1879 as a Clerk and Interpreter in the Provincial Department. At the time of his appointment as Governor of the Falkland Islands in 1904 he was Receiver-General and Colonial Secretary. Deryck Scarr called him 'a hard, efficient man' (Scarr, 1980).
Two photographs inserted in the scrapbook of Sir William Allardyce (held at RCMS 35), photographers unknown. His scrapbooks total thirteen volumes; but these are the only photographs stuck in them. They are in album 6, page 54 and album 2, page 75.
Presented to the Royal Empire Society by Lady Allardyce in 1942.

Dr. Robert Beith and W.L.A. at Naitonitoni, Navua, a long time ago! About 1884. 230 x 138 mm. In album 6, page 64. Showing Beith (who was medical officer in Fiji 1883-1888) and Allardyce standing near a small bungalow (in a plantation?) with palm trees in the background. Navua is a town in Viti Levu: Naitonitoni was the Government Station where the District Officer lived and worked.

Roko Tui Bua: Ame: Osea. 145 x 195 mm. In album 2, page 75. Ame and Osea were Fijian members of the crew of the cutter 'Aggie', owned by Mr. E. Wilkinson, which was wrecked in the Levuka hurricane on 1-14 March 1901. They were awarded Royal Humane Society Medals for their unsuccessful endeavours to save Wilkinson and another crew member, Ratu Mele. These were awarded by W.L. Allardyce, then Administrator of Fiji, at Government House in September 1901, and a press cutting from 'Western Pacific Herald' is included in the album. The photograph shows Ame and Osea wearing their medals. Behind them sits Roko Tui Bua, to whose province they belonged, and who spoke at the presentation.
