F.W. Torrington was London Liaison Officer of the Australian National Library, Canberra.
Collection of modern loose prints (six of them duplicates) of historical paintings, drawings and engravings, chiefly of Australia. Numbers 1-24 are prints (measuring 248 x 172 mm) of originals by Thomas Baines (1822-1875) and all except 20 relate to his involvement with the North Australian expedition of 1855-1857 led by A.G. Gregory. Numbers 1-9, 11-17 are of paintings in the Royal Geographical Society. Numbers 10, 18-20 are of paintings on glass (originals about 2 x 3 inches) for projection on a screen. Typed lists of both groups are kept with the prints. Numbers 21 and 22 are from originals in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the locations of numbers 23 and 24 are not known. The remainder (25-43) are miscellaneous; they include three by Conrad Martens (28-30) and three by S.T. Gill (32-34). The Australian relevance of the Scottish scenes (41-42) is not clear. There are full descriptions of the Baines items but most of the others lack titles.
Given to the library by F.W. Torrington, and are of items copied for the library's record purposes or to be considered for purchase by it.
