| Content and context |
|
It seems probable that this album represents the private collection of someone (possibly J.F. Butterworth) who had some professional connection with the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1888, since it includes a group photograph of English exhibitors, and as well as general views of the exhibition buildings, pictures entitled 'Moseley's exhibit' (a Northern-based tailor), and 'Interior of Mr. Goodwood's Office', which would seem to imply a somewhat more specialised interest in the proceedings than mere tourism.
An album containing mounted photographs of various sizes, by various photographers, with either handwritten captions or captions on the prints. The photographs were bought during a tour to Australia and New Zealand, the pictures breaking down into geographical units thus: 1-8 Suez Canal and Aden; 9-127 Australia; 128-135 New Zealand; 136-137 Naples; 138 Group portrait of exhibitors, Melbourne 1888.
Album presented to the Royal Colonial Institute by J.F. Butterworth, April 1919.

An Australian Sundowner. 200 x 146 mm A view showing a sundowner camped at the base of a hollow tree with a small fire in the foreground. The term 'sundowner' originates from the practice in the outback of giving rations of mutton, tea and flour to anyone who applied for work at a station-sundowners were that wandering body of men who always came at dusk, too late for any work to be exacted, but early enough to claim rations. How far this photograph is a genuine portrait of such a type, or a posed genre picture, is impossible to tell. (Possibly part of the Nicholas Caire series of 'Gippsland Scenery', plate 78). Fair condition.. |

Presumably the tree is some kind of eucalypt, although the dimensions appear to be wildly exaggerated: 'The Australian Encyclopaedia' gives 375 feet as the highest certified tree found in Australia, and the other measurements would appear to be equally dubious. |

|
Natives spearing fish from a 'dug-out'. 210 x 158 mm. A finely composed study of aboriginal fishermen, showing three men in a small dug-out canoe, one of whom holds a spear while others stand or sit on a tree trunk which juts into the river. Photograph by Charles Bayliss (stamped in relief on corner of print). The positive identification of this print as Bayliss' leads to the supposition that the previous aboriginal photographs are by him. They too display the same compositional exactitude and a striving to include as much information as possible in the print. By the same criteria many of the landscape photographs could also be Bayliss' work. All the prints taken in Sydney (Y308A/98-117) with the exception of two (which are of inferior quality, and probably amateur work) are positively identified on the prints as Bayliss' work, and it is not unlikely that most of the prints from south-east Australia were bought in Sydney from Bayliss' shop in George Street. This would certainly not conflict with Bayliss' known photographic activities; as well as making the famous panorama of Sydney for Bernard Holtermann, he made several expeditions all over New South Wales and Victoria photographing landscape, towns and native life.
