Content and context

A miscellaneous collection of photographs, of various sizes, and mounted on card. Most prints are captioned, titles given to uncaptioned prints are in square brackets. There are also 42 numbered captions on card (some appearing to have been cut from the prints?), in an envelope kept with the collection. Photographs are by Charles Nettleton, Herbert Deveril and possibly William Meluish. The geographical locations break down thus:

1-3 Views of Dunedin, c.1858-60, possibly by William Meluish

4-8 Miscellaneous New Zealand views, by various photographers

9-22 Views and panoramas of Melbourne, c.1870 by Charles Nettleton

23-75 View of New Zealand by Herbert Deveril, c.1873-1876.

The collection was presented to the Royal Colonial Institute by the daughters of the late Mr. George Cowie, of New Zealand, 14 November 1921.
