A collection of photographs of family and friends of Thomas William Barnes, an Irishman who emigrated to Australia probably around 1876. The collection consists of:
(a) 11 photographs framed behind celluloid and showing scenes in the outback.
(b) 55 small (approximately 57 x 90 mm) carte-de-viste portraits taken by various commercial firms in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney.
(c) 15 large (approximately 100 x 137 mm) carte-de-visite portraits by various Australian commercial photographers.
Nothing is known of T W Barnes beyond his place of birth - Waterford, and his date of birth - 11th December 1838 (an affidavit confirming this, signed by the Registering Officer for the Society of Friends in Waterford, is included in the collection). It would seem likely he went to Australia around 1876, as this is the date of the affidavit and it would seem likely that it was needed either as an immigration formality or to establish his bona fides at some stage after his arrival in Australia. No clue is given as to his profession. A few of the pictures are identified on the reverse, but most remain anonymous apart from a batch of sixteen small cartes-de-visite portraits (numbers 51-66) which are identified as photographs of the Blood family.
