Printed by W.A. Gullick, government printer, Sydney.

An album, with printed title page, containing matt black and white prints, mounted back to back without borders, measuring 347 x 274 mm, and showing scenes in Sydney and around the countryside of New South Wales. Prints either captioned on negative or with captions stuck on. A letter from the Agent-General for New South Wales stuck into the front of the album states 'Forwarded for the acceptance of Sir C. Prestwood Lucas, K.C.B., Assistant Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, by Mr. T.A. Coghlan, Agent-General for New South Wales in the name and on behalf of the Hon. Sir J.H. Carruthers, K.C.M.G., Executive Commissioner for New South Wales to the Franco-British Exhibition, 1908'. Photographer, or photographers, unknown.

Presented to the Royal Empire Society by the Executors of the late Sir Charles Lucas, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., May 1931.

1 Government House, Sydney, N.S. Wales. A view of the front of Government House, first occupied by Governor Gipps in 1845, and built with mock battlements and turrets.
Fair condition, some dirt marks..
2 The Treasury, Sydney. A view of the building from Macquarie Street; built of freestone it was started in 1849, and completed in 1851, during the governorship of Sit Charles Fitzroy and shortly after the first discovery of gold in the Colony.
Good condition..
3 Chief Secretary's Office, Sydney. A view from the gardens behind, looking through trees and shrubs towards the building, taken from the junction of Macquarie and Bridge Streets. The building now houses the Department of Works.
Good condition, slight silvering at edges..
4 General Post Office, Sydney. Photograph of an artist's impression of the building.

5 Art Gallery, Sydney. A three-quarter front view from the road of this fine building, designed by Vernon in the 1880's in Renaissance style.
Good condition, apart from slight fading in from edges..
6 The University. A view of the east front of the main building, with the great hall on the right. Built in the Gothic style, and designed by Edmund Blackett. Building started in 1854.

7 Lands Office, Sydney. A view of the building, similar in design to the Chief Secretary's Office and also designed by James Barnet in 1877. The photograph is taken from the junction of Bridge Street and Macquarie Place. The building was started in 1877 but by 1888 only the north-west corner was finished.

8 Technological Museum and College - Sydney. A view taken from the junction of Harris Street and Mary Ann Street. The museum is the nearer building, with the technical college behind it and to the right, facing on to Mary Ann Street. Both buildings were designed by William E. Kemp, the college in 1891 and the museum in 1892.

9 Royal Exchange, Sydney. A view of the building, which stands at the corner of Bridge Street and Gresham Street, taken from Macquarie Place. A sandstone building in the Corinthian manner and designed by J.F. Hilly, the foundation stone was laid in 1853 and the building opened four years later. The two upper floors of the building were added later by A.F. Pritchard. This picture was taken in 1901 at the earliest, the flags hanging on the building having among them the flag of the Federated State of Australia. The building was demolished in 1965.

10 Town Hall, Sydney. A view of the Town Hall from the junction of Druitt Street and George Street, with the Centennial Hall on the right.

11 St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney. A view of the east end of the Cathedral from George Street. Originally started by James Hume in 1837, it was completed by Edmund Blacket in 1874. The Cathedral stands behind the Town Hall.

12 St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. A view of the north end of the Cathedral from St. Mary's Road, with the Frazer fountain at extreme right of picture.

13 Bridge Street, Sydney. A view looking down Bridge Street towards the Domain gates from George Street. On the right hand side of the street can be seen the ornate stone façade of the North Queensland Insurance Co.'s building (later the Burns Philp building), the Royal Exchange, the Lands Office, and in the distance the Chief Secretary's Office (now Department of Works).

14 O'Connell Street, Sydney. A view looking down O'Connell Street from Bent Street, with horse cabs and pedestrians.

15 Public Buildings, Bridge Street, Sydney. A view looking down Bridge Street towards the Domain end, and showing on the right the Royal Exchange, the Lands Office and the Chief Secretary's Office.

16 King Street, Sydney. A view down the busy shopping street, with crowds on the pavements and a tram in the foreground. A prominent advertisement reads 'For Ladies Only. Miss Maude Maddock, specialist for removing superfluous Hair, Moles, etc., by electrolysis ...'.

17 Macquarie Street, Sydney. A view looking down the west side of Macquarie Street, showing the residential houses. The house partially seen on the extreme right of the picture is probably 'Burdekin House', opposite the Sydney Hospital. Built in 1841, it was regarded as 'the most handsome house in Sydney'. It was demolished in 1933.

18 George Street, Sydney. A view from above, looking north along George Street, with St. Andrew's Cathedral and the Town Hall on the skyline.

19 Moore Street, Sydney. A view from above along Moore Street, looking west to its junction with George Street. With pedestrians and horse cabs, but only one car visible. Moore Street became Martin Place when it was widened after a fire in Pitt Street in 1890 had destroyed a number of buildings in the area.

20 Circular Quay, Sydney. A view of the curving road on the south side of the Circular Quay looking west with numerous trams. Wharves and shipping (not visible) are to the right of the picture.

21 Shipping at Stockton, Newcastle District. A view of moored sailing ships, tied three deep to the shore. Stockton lies just north of Newcastle, on a peninsula the other side of the Hunter River. Like Newcastle it is an important coal producer; in the early days of the colony, the worst convicts from Newcastle were sent to Stockton as lime-burners.

22 The Dyke, Newcastle. A view of the wharves, with moored shipping and railway trucks loaded with coal running up to the ships' sides. The dyke is situated in the middle of Newcastle harbour at Carrington, and contains the main coal exporting wharves.

23 Loading sleepers for South Africa, Sydney harbour. A view looking down on to a pier piled with timber which is being loaded on to the steamer moored alongside.

24 Shipping at Circular Quay, Sydney. A view looking down on to the moored sailing ships at the quay. Taken from the east side of the quay, facing south into Sydney. James Barnet's Customs House can be partially seen (before the addition of the first floor verandah).

25 Loading Coal, Newcastle, N.S.W. A view taken from the wharfside showing coal being winched aboard a sailing ship.

26 Mail Steamers, Circular Quay, Sydney. A view taken from the SW corner of the quay, looking NE, with trams and ferries in the foreground, and mail steamers moored beyond on the east side of the quay.

33 Typical Farmer's Home, Nth Coast District, N.S.W [i.e. New South Wales]. A view of an extremely tidy small farmhouse, perched on top of a hill, and surrounded by a wooden fence. The house is a wooden building with corrugated iron roof, with adults and children standing on the verandah.

42 Glen Tin smelting Co. Works, Tent Hill. A view from a different angle of the same tin works, with men sluicing the mud in the foreground. New South Wales, formerly a large tin producer, has since the 1950s closed most of her remaining mines.

43 Mining at Broken Hill. A view looking towards the mines, with a railway line in the foreground, and a residential district in the distance. Situated in the far west of New South Wales, on the Barrier Range, the area was the subject of a gold rush in 1867. No gold was found and it was not until 1875 that it was discovered that the area contained enormous reserves of extremely concentrated silver lead ore. In the 1950's, even after extensive working, geologists estimated that the mines would continue to be productive for at least fifty years, possibly a hundred.
