Content and context

Presentation album given to the Bishop of Brisbane in March 1885. Showing views in and around Warwick. Captions are taken from a contemporary handwritten key pasted to the front free endpaper. An inscription in ornamental calligraphy on the front endpaper reads: 'Presented by the Parishioners of St. Marks, Warwick, Queensland, to the Right Reverend Mathew B Male D.D., Lord Bishop of Brisbane, on his retirement from the See, March 1885.' There are also two loose prints included with the album.

5 Waterworks, Warwick. 195 x 145 mm. A view looking down on to a fenced track and the waterworks, a modest building beside the Condamine Rver, with one brick chimney. Same caption on print. 1885
6 Timber Yards, nr Railway Station, Warwick. 195 x 145 mm. Captioned on print 'Timber yards, Warwick'. Photograph shows railway track running across picture from right hand corner, with sheds and stacks of timber. A high-chimneyed steam engine is in operation in the centre, with men working nearby, and a horse pulling a trolley along the line.

7 Albion Street, showing Land Office and Post Office. 195 x 145 mm. A view looking along the street, unpaved like Palmerin Street. The Post Office is the stone building at the right, nearest the camera, and beyond that is the Land Office. Beyond the Land Office is the store of 'Russell Wilkins and Co., Importers'.

This photograph was taken some time after Y3085D/7; a verandah has been added to the first floor frontage of the land office, and there are more telegraph poles along the pavement. Also evidence of some excavation in the road. Two traps stand in front of Dr. Mangelt's house. 1885

The bank where Y3085D/8 was taken from is now under water, with the river reaching almost to the roadway across the bridge. With man standing by the river, and a couple in a pony cart drawn by two horses. 1885
17 Palmerin Street. 195 x 145 mm. A view of the street showing more shops than are visible in Y3085D/4, including 'Brown and Wilson', 'Apothecaries Hall', 'Warwick Argus' and 'Government Auctioneer'. With numerous bystanders posing on the pavement.
