Content and context

264 x 206 mm. A photograph taken by Tempest Anderson on his second visit to Saint Vincent to report on the disastrous eruptions of La Soufrière in 1902 and 1903. The image shows a view looking down into the water-filled crater of La Soufrière and showing the interbedded tuffs and lavas on the far side. The type-written caption on the rear of the print reads (in full): 'The Crater of the Soufrière, St Vincent, from the south lip. Tempest Anderson, 1907.

The mountain was formerly known as Mongarn [changed in ink pen to 'Mougaru'] or Morne Garn [changed in ink pen to 'Garu'] and its eruptions in 1812 and 1902 are historic. The walls are formed of beds of ash often containing ejected blocks, alternating with sheets of lava, many of which are intrusive. A large dyke is seen on the left. In the centre is a crater lake about half a mile in diameter. The low platform round this lake is formed of ash thrown out by the small eruption of March 1903.

See Anderson and Flett, Phil. Trans. 1903 and 1907. T. Anderson. Geog. Journal March 1903.'
