Sir Daniel Morris was born in Glamorgan on 26 May 1844. He took 1st Class Honours in Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Dublin and was appointed Assistant Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Ceylon in 1877. Two years later he was appointed Director of the Botanic Department in Jamaica where he remained until his appointment as Assistant Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew in 1886. In 1898 he became Imperial Commissioner, West Indian Agricultural Department, and ten years later was made Scientific Advisor in Tropical Agriculture to the Colonial Office, a post he held until 1913. Even when not working in the Caribbean, he visited it on various scientific missions and his substantial output of books and articles on agricultural matters is chiefly concerned with the Caribbean. He became a Vice-President of the Royal Horticultural Society and of the Royal Empire Society and died on 9 February 1933.
A collection of loose prints of various sizes. Some prints are mounted on card and the majority of the are captioned. Unless otherwise stated, the caption appears on the front of the print. Titles composed for the catalogue are enclosed in square brackets. The collection includes photographs by J.F. Coonley (1-13), Adolphe Duperly (15-19), Norton Brothers (32-33), Tempest Anderson (34-35) and others unknown. The geographical areas represented in the photographs break down thus: 1-13, Nassau; 14, Barbados; 15-20, Jamaica; 21, St Lucia; 22-26, Antigua; 27, St Kitts; 28-31, Dominica; 32-34, St Vincent; 35, Hawaii; 36-40, French and Dutch West Indies and unidentified.

The Crater of the Soufrière, St Vincent [i.e. La Soufrière, Saint Vincent], from the south lip, 1907. 264 x 206 mm. A photograph taken by Tempest Anderson on his second visit to Saint Vincent to report on the disastrous eruptions of La Soufrière in 1902 and 1903. The image shows a view looking down into the water-filled crater of La Soufrière and showing the interbedded tuffs and lavas on the far side. The type-written caption on the rear of the print reads (in full): 'The Crater of the Soufrière, St Vincent, from the south lip. Tempest Anderson, 1907. The mountain was formerly known as Mongarn [changed in ink pen to 'Mougaru'] or Morne Garn [changed in ink pen to 'Garu'] and its eruptions in 1812 and 1902 are historic. The walls are formed of beds of ash often containing ejected blocks, alternating with sheets of lava, many of which are intrusive. A large dyke is seen on the left. In the centre is a crater lake about half a mile in diameter. The low platform round this lake is formed of ash thrown out by the small eruption of March 1903. See Anderson and Flett, Phil.
