Photographs of British Honduras [i.e. Belize], 1911

Title United Fruit Coy's Banana Plantation, Stann Creek
Reference Y3078B/20
Extent and Medium Good condition, apart from slight fading.
Content and context

127 x 101 mm. A view looking across a large field under cultivation with huts dotted here and there and mountains in the distance. Banana production in Belize was a fast expanding export crop with a large market in the United States. After the development of Stann Creek as a banana centre there was an equally fast decline as disease and poor cultivation methods took their toll. By 1906 many of the larger producers had withdrawn from the market, but from the evidence of this picture the United Fruit Company seems to have ridden the storm.
