Content and context

Lewis W. Clemens was of Ashfield Lodge, Toronto and was active in the Caribbean in the 1900s. No further details are available other than that he is listed as an amateur photographer.

A collection photographed by Lewis W. Clemens. It contains 14 photographs mounted on paper, with a short typewritten descriptive text (of the original 19 prints, 5 are missing). The photographs measure approximately 100 x 75 mm.

8 Entrance to the Oxford Caves, Jamaica. 100 x 76 mm. Showing a young man standing among the stalactites in the caves. 'In these caves situated near Balaclava it is believed the Spanish hid their treasure when driven out by the British in 1655. And here also the persecuted Arawaks sought refuge during the Spanish occupation'. (Clemens).

9 Pulping coffee, Jamaica. 100 x 75 mm. Showing two Jamaican women at work with the pulping machinery (which separates the kernel from the outer husk of the bean) at Oxford Estate, Jamaica.
Good condition, apart from slight overall fading.
10 The old sugar works, Rose Hall Jamaica. 101 x 73 mm. 'Here can be seen the stone aqueduct, the wheel and wheelhouse and much of the old time sugar machinery. In the foregeround is the fountain where the mules employed get water. This is all disused now in favour of a thoroughly modern equipment recently shipped out from England.' (Clemens).

12 Ruins of Spanish Monestery [sic] Jamaica. 100 x 76 mm. Showing the crumbling outer walls of the old monastery at Miranda Hill, Montego Bay.

13 Native women washing clothes, Jamaica. 100 x 72 mm. Showing a native woman washing clothes beside a rocky stream '... and it is surprising what excellent work these women turn out under the primitive conditions'. (Clemens).
