Bridgetown from the Railway Station. 235 x 191 mm. View from the Railway Station looking NNW across the Careenage towards Trafalgar Square. The statue of Nelson in the square can just be seen in front of the premises of H.D. Shepherd and Co., Ship Chandlers, which stands at the junction of Broad Street and High Street. Taking up most of the central and right-hand portion of the print are the Public Buildings, built from local coral rock to the designs of J.F. Bourne, Superintendent of Public Works, and opened in 1874. Built in a modified Italian Renaissance style, but with the verandah colonnades arched in a Gothic point rather than rounded. The buildings are in two blocks separated by a tree-lined avenue. In front of this avenue can be seen the fountain of the Fountain Gardens. Fair condition, slight spotting and fading.. |
