| Content and context |
|
Collected by the Rev. James Bell, who was ordained deacon in 1902 and priest in 1903 by the Bishop of Newfoundland. Bell was Curate of Bay Roberts 1902-1904, Incumbent 1904-1906 and Rector 1906-1907. From 1907 to 1912, he was Curate of Newfoundland Cathedral, after which he returned to England. These photographs relate chiefly to Church life.
An album of photographs, with some loose insertions, including an annotated map of 'St. John's N.F, 1905', relating to Newfoundland 1902-1912. Most are 100 x 80 mm., but in many cases only part is visible owing to the size and shape of the frame through which they are seen.
The collection was studied by Professor Maurice and Mrs Shirley Scarlett in 1985; their information is embodied in the captions to nos. 3, 5-17, 30-51, 53, 55-56, 67, 69, 71, 74-75, 80, 82, 86, 90, 92-93, 95-101, 110-111.
The album was given by James Bell's son, the Rev. Edwin Bell, in October 1984.

Fire in St John's Newfoundland, November 1908. The main part of the principal building of Messrs. Baird, Gordon and Co's fish warehouse in Water St after the fire had been extinguished. This photograph was taken by the Rev. James Bell, and published in the 'Daily Graphic' on 12th November 1908. (See cutting and remittance advice inserted in album.) Fires have often caused severe damage to St John's. The worst of these was in July 1892. |

View down Longs Hill, St John's at the turn of the century. On the left hand side are the Methodist College and home for boarders. The former was pulled down in 1984/85, the latter much earlier. The spire behind is that of the Presbyterian Church, and the scaffolded building in the centre is the new Gower Street Methodist (now United) Church. The Anglican Cathedral is behind it. The ships in harbour could belong to the North Atlantic Squadron. In the background on the left is Signal Hill and the Cabot Tower. On the right are the South Side Hills, and sealing and similar premises on the South Side by the Harbour. In the centre background are the Narrows. An interesting item is the square of trees to the centre right of the road, planted to act as a fire break in the event of any future fires, an official order after the 1892 fire that destroyed much of St John's. Creator: Parsons, Simeon Henry, 1844-1908, photographer. |
