| Content and context |
152 x 134 mm. Full length portrait of three youths clothed in blankets and with faces covered in white clay. The caption continues: 'This is the costume worn just after the initiation ceremonies: white blankets with red stripes. It is death for any woman of their own race to see them, and they cover their faces with the blankes if a woman should appear. The women are warned by children when there are Kwetas about. One defiant woman paid the dealth penalty in 1946, and those responsible were not punished for this act. 1948.' |
