Edward John Dunn was born in Bristol in 1844 but when he was five his parents emigrated to Australia, where he eventually became a geologist. Returning to England in 1871 he broke his journey at the Cape and spent two years investigating the mineral potentialities of the Colony. After further training in England, he returned to South Africa in 1875. In 1886 Dunn went back to Australia and eventually became director of the Geological Survey of Victoria. After his retirement in 1912 Dunn continued his geological and anthropological researches. He died aged 92 on 20 April 1937.
A collection of prints of various sizes. The photographs are mostly family portraits and albumen print cartes de visite of leading individuals in South Africa during his time. However, there are also some photographs of his retirement home, Roseneath, showing artifacts he had collected (35-53).
Presented by Miss Lilian Dunn of Melbourne through Dr G.F. Claringbull, Keeper of Mineralogy, British Museum (Natural History) in 1960.

[Robert Moffat]. 64 x 107 mm. A steel engraving of a head and shoulders portrait of the missionary Robert Moffat (1795-1883). Apprenticed to a gardener in his youth, Moffat was accepted by the L.M.S. in 1816 and, after delays in Cape Town, reached Great Namaqualand in 1818. In 1829 he took over the society's station at Dithakong but had disappointing results until 1929 when he won the friendship of Mzilikazi, Chief of the Matabele. Moffats major achievement was his translation of the bible into Tswana: his translation of St. Luke was published in 1830 and was the first publication of any part of the bible into a South African native language; the New Testament was published in 1840 and the Old Testament in two parts in 1853 and 1857. The scriptures were printed on the press which Moffat had set up at Kuruman. During his visit to England in 1839-43 he published his 'Missionary labours and scenes in Southern Africa (1846) and the popularity of this and of his lectures and sermons instigated much of the missionary activity in South Africa in the following years. Moffat retired to England in 1870 and is buried in Norwood Cemetery. Creator: Unknown. Good condition.. |

Mackenzie, Missionary. 104 x 146 mm. A Cabinet Card Photograph, half length portrait of the missionary John Mackenzie (1835-1899) seated at a table. Mackenzie came to Kuruman as a L.M.S. missionary in 1858. In 1862 he was transferred to Shoshong and from 1869-71 he was on furlough in England. In 1873 he was appointed tutor at the Moffat Institution, then temporarily based at Shoshong, and moved with the school to Kuruman, where he taught from 1876-82. After a second furlough he resigned from the Society in 1884 and was appointed Deputy Commissioner in Bechuanaland, a position from which he resigned however after only three months. From 1891-99 he was Missionary Pastor at Hankey, Cape Colony. A fervent believer in the extension of British rule in South Africa, his trip to England in 1882-84 was spent largely in speaking, writing and campaigning on this issue. The backmark reads:'Shoyer Bros Photographers, 43 Grave Street, Near Government House, Cape Town. Duplicates may be obtained at any time and enlargements made to any size'. Creator: Shoyer Bros. To Dunn E. Prague 24/1/79. Emil Holub. 103 x 148 mm. A Cabinet Card Photograph, half length portrait of the Czech explorer Emil Holub (1847-1902). After studying medicine in Prague (1866-72), Holub went to South Africa in 1872 and the following year was exploring in Griqualand and the Taung area. His next expedition was to the Zambesi (1875-76) and this was followed by an extended trip to Europe in 1879-83. His last African expedition was an abortive attempt to travel from the Cape to Cairo, a project which was abandoned when he reached Kimberley in June 1887. Holub returned to Europe in August 1887 and from ten until 1892 he was involved in lecturing in Europe. He later visited the U.S.A. (1894) and Poland (1896) on lecture tours, but his plans for further exploration in Africa had to be abandoned owing to ill health. The caption, written on the reverse of the mount, is slightly baffling since Holub did not leave South Africa until August 1879. The photograph was taken in 1873 at the earliest (the letterpress on the reverse of the mount records that the photographers exhibited at the Vienna Exhibition of that year), presumably during a visit to Europe by Holub in the mid 1870's. The caption probably refers to the date on which it was given to Dunn in South Africa. The backmark reads: 'Praha H. Eckert, J. Mullern, Prag. Osoby animaji se jen od 10 hod. dop. Az do 2 hod. Odpol. Vozy mohou az k prijimacimu salonu dojeti. Personen-Aufnahmen finden nur von 10 Uhr Vorm. Bis 2 Uhr Nm. Statt. Wagen konnen bis zum Empfangs-Salon vorfahren.
