Title San Thomas' [i.e. Sao Tome] Island
Reference Y305K/24
Covering Dates 25 Feb. 1884
Extent and Medium Fair condition, some yellowing.
Content and context

290 x 220 mm. A view from a height looking over shacks and more imposing residences towards distant jungle. With clothes drying on the banks of the stream in the foreground. A view presumably taken in Sao Tome, the capital of the island and situated on the north-east coast. Sao Tome, situated 150 miles north-west of Cape Lopez in the Gulf of Guinea was at this period part of the Portuguese Colony of Sao Tome e Principe, its neighbouring island. Discovered in 1470-1471, Sao Tome had been a centre of controversy over slavery in Portuguese possessions since the mid 1860's. The scandal simmered until the publication of Henry W. Nevinson's 'A Modern Slavery' in 1906, the repercussions of which led to the Cadbury boycott of the island's cocoa and the repatriation of Angolan labour by 1917.
