| Content and context |
201 x 134 mm. Showing African troops on parade with three small field pieces in a courtyard in Ussher Fort. The European officer in command is unidentified. The fort dates back to 1642 when the Dutch built a lodge on the site; ten years later the lodge was enlarged and fortified and named Fort Creve Coer and after various periods of occupation and abandonment, was shattered by an earthquake in 1862. The fort was transferred from Dutch to English authority on 4th January 1868 and was renamed Fort Ussher after Herbert Taylor Ussher, Administrator of the Gold Coast from 1867-1872. |
