Four stepped platforms, flanked by eight sphinx-like lions, lead up to the temple, which contains in the central niche of the back wall a large head of Rhodes. For the pedestal kipling wrote a moving verse:. 'The immense and brooding spirit still. Shall quicken and control. Living he was the land, and dead,. His soul shall be her soul.' . (Metcalf, 1980, pp.9-10). Fittingly, this memorial was the first major example of Baker's new vision of imperial architecture and was designed in 1905 after his return from a tour of the classical sites in the Mediterranean funded by Rhodes.

Showing the front facade of the house in Tokai built by Andreas Rauch in the 1790's: 'This is the usual peninsula u-shaped house, but with an added bar, with gabled ends ... The steeply-sloping ground calls for an exceptionally high stoep, unique in being reached not centrally, but at the two ends by twin flights of steps, gracefully curved ... The forecourt is marked by symmetrically-placed outbuildings on two sides, and a line of pillars on the third: the two central pillars of the line are enlarged to form entrance-piers through which the oak avenue of approach leads into the forecourt. Approached by this oak avenue, the setting is admirable, the house sitting up high above the forecourt and the small and formal garden in it, and dominated in its turn by the forest-clad mountain behind' (De Bosdari, 1953, p.39).

The end gables are exceptionally finished, with the apex split into two scrolls: they are reminiscent of the outstnding end-gables of Bien Donne. The earliest recorded attempts at domesticating these birds date from around 1853 and from 1865 the industry grew rapidly, centred mainly around Graaff-Reinet. There were immense profts to be made and at the height of the trade a breeding pair would fetch several hundred pounds. Two great booms took place in the industry, in 1880-1885 and 1910-1913, but the market was largely destroyed by the First World War when much of the stock was destroyed for leather. Later attempts have failed to re-establish the market on its former level.

While some criticism was made of the site's distance from the centre of the city (it is situated in the north-east corner) and the expense of building the amphitheatre, these were disarmed by Baker's explicit references to the old classical sites, Meintjes Kop dominating the town 'as did the Acropolis the city of Athens or as the higher Acro-Corinth which looks down upon the later Corinth on the shores of the Gulf' (Baker,1944, p. 58).
