194 x 145 mm. Showing a group of German D.O.G. employees, Arabs and Indians (a parsee among them) standing in front of the customs shed with large piles of elephant tusks, graded according to size, lying on the ground around them. The caption is taken from Meinecke (1899) where the photograph is reproduced as a woodcut with the following explanation (roughly translated):'Many millions of marks of ivory produce was shipped to Zanzibar through the old customs port at Bagamoyo. The caravans bring in large loads worth hundreds of thousands of rupees. Immediately after arrival the ivory must be brought to the customs post for weighing and entering in the index so that it may be released for free trade.' (Meinecke, 1899, p. 54).
