Content and context

288 x 242 mm. Showing the interior of Charlton and Meyer's stamp battery, with the stamps at the left and the driving machinery beyond. One of the leading gold mining partnerships in Johannesburg in the early days, Meyer and Charlton claimed to have installed the first battery (a small one of three stamps) actually on the reef: this was sold in 1888 and the machinery seen here is a later version. The date of manufacture of the stamping machinery, 1888, can be read on the plaques in the background. The photograph was probably taken by E. Caney in about 1890. The print is numbered '158'.
