Covering Dates circa 1873-circa 1890 (Most of the photographs were probably taken around the mid-1870s (see plate 3 and 11) but the album was probably assembled at a later date: plates 20 and 21 refer to the Zulu War of 1879 and plates 9 and 15 have an air of the 1880s rather than the 1870s.)
Extent and Medium 35 images in 1 album; The prints are in fair condition. Following flood damage in February 1980, the album now lacks its cover, and the pages have mostly come unstuck.

An album containing albumen prints of various sizes. The album shows views in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and a few from Mozambique. The majority of the images are briefly captioned; captions composed for untitled prints are enclosed in square brackets.

The album was purchased in 1910.

1 The Point, Durban, Natal [i.e. KwaZulu-Natal]. 192 x 135 mm. A view from a neighbouring hillside looking across the Bay of Natal, with ships at anchor in the foreground.
Poor condition, edges have tears and there are numerous markings on the print..

2 Botanical gardens, Durban, Natal [i.e. KwaZulu-Natal]. 201 x 132 mm. A view looking across a shrub lined path in the botanical gardens with a family group posed in front of a small house (partially obscured) in the background.
Poor condition, some overall fading..

3 Durban, Natal [i.e. KwaZulu-Natal]. 195 x 134 mm. A view looking west along West Street with West Street Central in the foreground. On the street are several spans of oxen. Annotated to the side of the print, in pencil and in a different hand to the title, and possibly written by the original cataloguer, are the following captions: '75 G. Prince, Farrier Central W. St, H + R, drapers, P. Henwood, ironmongers, Brittania Hse. West Street, West'; 'Before 1879'; 'Central West Street looking West.' This photograph was probably taken in the mid 1870's: by 1879 the drapery firm of Henwood and Roseveare is no longer listed in the 'Natal Almanac, Directory and Register.' (Vietzen, 1963).

11 Pietermaritzburg, Natal [i.e. KwaZulu-Natal]. 172 x 114 mm. A view from the top storey of a building looking south-west along Church Street, Pietermartzburg. In the right foreground, at No. 22, are the premises of the wine and spirit merchant Edward Rance (1827-1876). This dates the picture to before 1879, by which year Rance is no longer featured in Vietzen (1963). He may have moved to these premises in 1975/6. This photograph was previously titled 'Durban, Natal', but 'Durban' has been crossed out by the original hand and 'Pietermaritzburg' has been added to the right hand side. The print is also annotated, in pencil, with '22 Church St' and 'Edward Rance in 75 not 79', presumably by the original cataloguer.
