Content and context

Herman Max Gluckman (1911-1975) was Director of the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute in Northern Rhodesia from 1941-47; he was later Professor of Social Anthropology in the University of Manchester.

A collection of numbered prints, unless otherwise stated measuring circa 210 x 160 mm, in a 19 page typescript volume entitled 'Barotseland', written and illustrated by Max Gluckman. His typescript is undated but the illustrations closely resemble, and in some cases are identical with, those used in Gluckman (1945) of which a photocopy is filed with this collection. It is not known how these photographs were used - perhaps projected by epidiascope. Numbers 1-54 are captioned on the back, but the captions below are derived from this source and from Gluckman (1945).

The subjects fall into broad categories:

1-4 Transport

5-16 Villages and dwellings

17-27 Cultivation

28-52 Fishing

53-69 Crafts

70-71 Sawmill

72-74 Cereals

75-93 The people, including administration and ceremonies

94-97 Medicine
