Content and context

The photographs were taken or collected by Francis Philip Chandler. Chandler was a junior partner in the firm of Leslie and Anderson, Ltd.. The company were east African produce merchants dealing mainly with coffee, copra and cloves.

A collection of separate photographs and a panorama. The photographs date from Chandler's residence in east Africa, and are chiefly of Zanzibar Island, but 60-73 and 83-87 are of Dar es Salaam, 75 is probably of England, 88-89 are of South Africa and 90-96 are of the Victoria Falls.

Presented by Michael J. Chandler, son of Francis Philip Chandler, in 1971.

1 [Panorama of Zanzibar Town]. 1160 x 72 mm. A 360 degree panoramic view of Zanzibar Town composed of 12 joined prints. The reverse of the photograph is annotated: 'Circular view of Zanzibar taken from flagmast on Usagara House. Roof of bungalow in foreground'. Chandler's house, Usagara House, appears to have been situated at the western end of town behind Main Street. The prominent features in the panorama are the clock-tower of the Beit el Ajaib (section one), the spires of the Roman Catholic Cathedral (section two), the spire of the Anglican Cathedral (section three), the wireless station aerial (section four), the Mnazi Mmoja Recreation Park (wooded area at the junction of sections four and five), and the Museum (white dome at junction of sections five and six).

Spurrier was for many years the Government Health Officer in Zanzibar and was also for a period the editor of the 'Zanzibar Gazette'. 1926
