RCS/Y30468A-I/Y30468A contains:
1 Galla woman. 120 x 165 mm. A view showing a woman standing beside an ox on which a baby is lying in a sun-shaded cradle. The tribe from which the woman (and the groups seen in Y30468A/2-14) come is unidentified, but they bear strong similarities to more northern types and hence may be one of the Galla tribes who inhabited parts of the Tanaland interior at this time. A similar view to Y30468/13.
Fair condition, slight marking..
1890–1905
2 Group of Galla tribesman. 119 x 168 mm. A view showing a group of men gathered near the base of a tree and armed with spears and shields. 1890–1905
3 Swahili soldiers. 168 x 117 mm. A formal portrait showing a group of uniformed Swahili soldiers armed with rifles. These are possibly men under Rogers' command employed in the service of the IBEA.
Fair condition..
1890–1905
4 Group of Galla warriors. 167 x 120 mm. A view showing a group of tribesmen seated in long grass. Single coloured flags fly from all the mens' spears: this might be the red flag of Zanzibar and indicate employment by the Sultan. 1890–1905
5 Group of Galla warriors. 164 x 123 mm. A similar view to Y30468A/6 showing a group of warriors standing or squatting in long grass.
Fair condition, but an underexposed photograph..
1890–1905
6 Galla warrior. 120 x 167 mm. A portrait of a tribesman standing in scrubland and carrying spears and a shield.
Fair condition..
1890–1905

8 Unidentified mainland group. 168 x 119 mm. A view showing an elderly man and three women (possibly his wives) grouped in front of a wooden stockade. The location and tribe are unidentified. 1890–1905

Fair condition, slight fading..
1890–1905
14 Mainland village group. 165 x 118 mm. A view showing a group of unidentified Africans arranged in two rows. Some carry bows and arrows and spears while others are armed with long-barrelled rifles. The man seen in Y30468A/8 and 12 stands in the back row of the group. From their well-armed appearance it is possible that these are members of the Waboni tribe, against whom Rogers mounted several expeditions (see introduction). Their physical appearance coincides reasonably with a description quoted in 'British East Africa' by P.L. McDermott (2nd Edition, 1895). 1890–1905
15 Waterfront at Lamu. 118 x 168 mm. A view looking along the beach at Lamu towards the British Residency, above which the Zanzibar flag is flying. 1890–1905
16 Ceremonial visit to Lamu. 166 x 116 mm. A view looking along the Lamu waterfront towards the British Residency where crowds are gathered on the beach to watch the arrival of a boat at the Residency pier. The occasion and date have not been identified, but since both the boat and the Residency are flying the Zanzibar flag, it is likely that this is a visit by the Sultan (Y30468A/18-20, 22-28 and 42-43 also deal with the same event). Sultan Hamoud bin Mahomed (Sultan 1896-1902) visited Lamu for a holiday from September-October 1901 (missing Mathews' funeral) and this would tie in chronologically with these pictures being placed near those of Mathews' funeral in the album. 1901
17 Boats off the British Residency, Lamu. 166 x 121 mm. A view from the Lamu waterfront showing longboats and the ceremonial launch (of the Sultan) lying just off the Residency pier. 1901

20 Waterfront at Lamu. 166 x 118 mm. A view looking along the Lamu waterfront after the departure of the ceremonial launch seen in Y30468A/19. 1901
21 Zanzibar street scene [?]. 151 x 207 mm. A view looking along an unidentified street, probably in Zanzibar. The large white building at the right of the print flies the Union Jack from its mast and has many other flags draped over its façade. Prominent among those is the white ensign and the occasion is probably the visit of a British warship. 1890–1905
22 Ceremonial launch off Lamu. 165 x 121 mm. A view looking along the Lamu waterfront towards the British Residency pier and showing the ceremonial launch and other boats lying just off from the pier. 1890–1905

26 Boat leaving British Residency Pier, Lamu. 168 x 120 mm. A blurred print showing a launch (not the ceremonial launch) and a longboat leaving the Residency Pier watched by crowds of spectators.

1890–1905
27 Ceremonial boat off Lamu. 166 x 121 mm. An indistinct close-up showing the crowded ceremonial boat described in Y30468A/19. 1890–1905

29 IBEA Co Building, Witu. 204 x 142 mm. A view looking along a path towards a large thatched building. On a flagpole beside the building flies a flag consisting of a Union Jack inset into a plain background. This is possibly an IBEA Co flag: although it does not correspond to the flag illustrated on company treaties, it is possible that several varieties were used. 1890–1905
30 Witu. 204 x 141 mm. A view looking across an open square towards a flagpole and long thatched buildings. The building at the right (in front of which stands an armed soldier) is probably a barracks. 1890–1905

33 Laying the foundation stone of the Sultan's new bungalow at Chwaka, April 22 1900. 255 x 207 mm. A view showing a group of Arabs and Swahilis gathered around the foundation stone while Joseph Thomas Last (c. 1849-1933), Commissioner for Slavery in Zanzibar 1897-1905, reads the opening address. The figure facing Last across the foundation stone is probably the Liwali of Chwaka. Photograph by J.B. Coutinho. See also Y30468D/86. The ceremonies are reported in detail in The 'Zanzibar Gazette' for April 25 1900.
Creator: Coutinho and Sons.

34 Investiture of Sultan by Consul General Colonel Ferreira de Castro, October 18 1900. 203 x 150 mm. A view showing a group of officials arriving at the Beit-el-Ajeib. The central figure is probably the Portuguese Consul-General Colonel Ferreira da Castro, who on October 18 1900, invested Sultan Seyyid Hamoud with the Grand Cross of the Most Noble Order of the Immaculate Conception. 18 Oct. 1900

39 Funeral of Sir Lloyd William Mathews, Saturday October 12 1901. 236 x 174 mm. A view looking down from the temporary light house onto the square in front of the Beit-el-Ajait and the harbour beyond. The funeral procession is leaving Mathews' house preceded by a double line of marines carrying reversed arms. Directly in front of the coffin walks a firing party of marines with British officials walking behind the gun-carriage. Mathews died of malaria on October 11th. See the 'Zanzibar Gazette' for October 16th 1901 which identifies the pall-bearers and Y30468A/40. 12 Oct. 1901
40 Funeral of Sir Lloyd William Mathews, Saturday October 12th 1901. 236 x 173 mm. A view taken from the same viewpoint as Y30468A/39 but a few moments later. The gun carriage bearing the coffin is now in the foreground and the pall-bearers can be identified from the list in the 'Zanzibar Gazette' (16/10/01):. Ten officials of the Zanzibar Government were the pall-bearers, on the right side in order being Captain Agnew [Port Officer], Mr Bomanjee Maneckjee [Minister of Public Works], Dr Macdonald [Government Medical Officer], Mr Wilson [Solicitor], Mr Swinherd [Customs Officer]: on the left side Mr J.T. Last [Commissioner for Slavery], Mr Coster [Collector of Customs], Dr Spurrier [Government Health Officer], Mr Lyne [Director of Agriculture] Mr Reilly [Eastern Telegraph Co.] Behind the coffin are the two principal mourners Basil Cave and General Raikes, followed by a crowd of mourners and spectators. 12 Oct. 1901
41 Coffin of Sir Lloyd William Mathews, Saturday October 12 1901. 294 x 213 mm. A view showing the coffin, covered in wreaths and with Mathews' helmet placed on top, standing in a downstairs room of his house prior to the funeral. The walls in the background have been hung with black draperies. This is possibly the 'beautiful photograph of this last resting place within the house' taken by A.C. Gomes ('Zanzibar Gazette' 16/10/1901). See Y30468B/1 for a picture of Mathews during his lifetime.
