Content and context

T.J. Spooner, born on 9 October 1862, was a railway engineer in India in the 1890s. He was appointed a District Engineer on the Uganda Railway on 1 January 1898 and his appointment was terminated after 1 February 1901, when he possibly returned to India. F. (later Sir Frederick) Jackson was at that time Deputy Commissioner of Uganda.

Album inscribed inside the front cover 'To F. Jackson Esqre C.B. In remembrance of a very nice sojourn in the Uganda Protectorate with the compliments of the author by T.J. Spooner late of the Uganda Rly.' The album was given to H.B. Thomas by Lady Jackson in the 2960s (see Y3046A). The photographs are captioned by Spooner, with further details added in some cases by H.B. Thomas. Most of them show scenes on Lake Victoria, but 11 is of the Mutiny Memorial at Bukaleba, and the proof of an article from the Uganda Journal, March 1958, which reproduces and describes this is also included. Some are dated '11-01.

Presented to the Royal commonwealth Society by H.B. Thomas in October 1969.
