Content and context

David Frederick Cox Hawkins (1917-1997) went as a teacher to the Niger Mission of the Church Missionary Society in about 1937 and served in Onitsha and Awka in the (then) Eastern Region. He was ordained deacon in 1948 and priest in 1949. Lois Talbot went to Nigeria as a teacher and they married in the early sixties. They left Nigeria during the Biafra War and David took a curacy in Leckhampton in 1969. He held a number of incumbencies in the West Country, retiring in 1982.

A collection of Kodachrome transparencies of Nigeria from the collection of Canon David and Mrs Lois Hawkins. The transparencies are all captioned as listed. It is believed that they were used by the Hawkins in deputation work in England during their periodic home leaves.

Donated by the sister of Mrs Lois Hawkins, through Mr Geoffrey Hill, in September 1999.
