Content and context

In a letter to the Librarian, dated 1974, D.C. Dorward, Centre of West African Studies, Birmingham University, suggests that the photographs were taken by Captain Mair. An extract from this letter is stored with the photographs.

A collection of prints, each measuring approximately 110 x 55 mm. A number of photographs in the album relate to the Northern Hinterland Expedition and the compiler of the album was clearly connected with the Southern Nigeria Regiment of the West African Frontier Force.

Album presented by Mrs. Vivien Warrington on behalf of Mr. J. Leavey, 1974.

73 Accession Proclamation of King George V by Podevin the Acting D.C. [Ogoja]. 102 x 59 mm. Showing Podevin, in a white suit addressing soldiers of the Southern Nigeria Regiment drawn up on the parade ground at Ogoja. George Sibbit Podevin (1878-1918) served in the South African Constabulary 1901-08 and was Acting District Commissioner, Ogoja May-August 1910 and later at Obudu. Podevin was a Transport Officer in the Cameroons during the Great War and was killed on December 2 1918.
