Ivor Charles Redwood was born on 13 June 1891 and served in World War I as an officer of the Royal Engineers, in France and on other fronts. He then went to the Sudan as an engineer and was particularly involved in water supplies. He retired after World War II but later accepted an invitation to return to the Sudan. At some stage (presumably between his two Sudan engagements) he worked in Saudi Arabia. He was a keen amateur photographer, and a philatelist who left his stamp collection to be sold in aid of the Sudan Mission. After his retirement to England he spent his winters in warmer climes. He died on 4 July 1964.
A collection of albums containing prints, in addition to a further 4 albums of photographs and postcards of World War I not listed here. The majority of the photographs are stuck in the albums, but there are also 69 loose ones. Many of these are Redwood's own enlargements from his smaller photographs, and have been removed from passe-partout framing and, in most cases, inserted in the album containing the smaller versions. There are some captions, but these vary in detail and it has been necessary to add descriptive captions in many cases. The albums do not appear to have any very clear chronological or geographical pattern, and with the obscurity of some of the place names, and the resemblance of pipe-laying in the Sudan to similar work in Saudi Arabia, some errors may have occurred. The dates on some of the captions suggest that Redwood worked in Saudi Arabia between 1948 and 1954.
Presented by Sir Thomas Redwood, Ivor's cousin, and Lady Redwood of Flushing, Falmouth, in December 1964, on the initiative of another cousin, Miss Gwendolen Mary Redwood, who had also given photographs to the RCS (see Y3058A).
