Khartoum 1898

Title The Grenadiers during the fight
Reference Y3042C/111
Covering Dates 2 Sep. 1898 (The photograph is stuck on to an album page entitled 'September 2nd, 6.0 a.m.'.)
Extent and Medium Good condition.
Content and context

76 x 76 mm. View looking over the heads of the soldiers, past the protective thorn zariba and towards the battlefield. The fact that nothing can be seen of the enemy indicates how little chance the Dervishes had against modern weapons of getting close enough to make their numbers and courage tell. The second bombardment of the town had begun at daybreak. At 6 am scouts reported that the enemy were advancing and at 6.50 am the 32nd Field Battery opened fire at a range of 2700 yards on the Dervishes. The Dervishes retreated at around 8 am leaving some 2000 dead on the battlefield.
