|
A collection of albumen prints measuring approximately 210 x 280 mm, captioned either in the negative or in pencil on the reverse. The collection contains several duplicates and appears to contain photographs from several sources. Prints 1-10 show architectural and landscape views in Egypt (Cairo, the Pyramids and the Suez Canal), the remainder are commercial ethnographical studies of native people from Egypt, the Sudan, Somalia and Abyssinia.
Photographs by Zangaki, Bonfils, Georgiladakis and others.
The majority of the prints were received by the Royal Colonial Institute in 1926.

Osman Digna, slaver and Sudanese warrior, Suakin 1880. 196 x 247 mm. Half length seated studio portrait of a Sudanese warrior, his arm resting in an arm rest. According to the caption this is a portrait of Osman Digna (c 1840-1926), the Sudanese leader who joined the Mahdist cause in 1883 after suffering imprisonment for slave trading at the hands of the British and Egyptians. He was active in the Sudan until the decisive defeat of Mahdism at Omdurman in 1898; after this battle he fled to the Red Sea hills. Fair condition, slight fading.. |
