Arrival of Sir Edward Stubbs in Ceylon [i.e. Sri Lanka], December 1933

Prints 1-6 document the arrival of Sir Edward Stubbs to take up his appointment as Governor of Ceylon in 1933. The remainder, which show scenes during a trooping of the colour by the Ceylon Light Infantry, appear to date from the following year, since in print 7 several of the spectators wear arm-bands in mourning for King Albert I of the Belgians who died in 1934. Reginald Edward Stubbs (1876-1947) started his career as a clerk in the Colonial office, and was later Colonial Secretary of Ceylon from 1913-19. His gubanatorial appointments were: Hong Kong 1919-25, Jamaica 1926-32, Cyprus 1932-33 and Ceylon 1933-37.

These prints were the property of Frederick Oscar Oertel and were presented to the RCS by his son in 1984.
